Habits and routines make up our day. Are your days filled with ‘Have to’ moments or are they filled with ‘Want to’ moments? This question was posed this morning to me by individuals in a Twitter space. It made me examine what my days are filled with. There are times that I look at my to-do list and I say “I have to get all of these things done.” We've all been there. When we are able to take a thousand foot view at our to-do list and really examine whether or not getting those tasks done will be life changing can indeed change our life. I've seen it and I have fallen victim to it where I begrudgingly perform a task that does not seem to move the needle on my mission or vision for what I want to achieve in life.
My ultimate goal is to create excellence in all that I do…husband, father, friend, and overall good man. Excellence is something we should all strive to achieve. There are many ways to do this but our habits are one of the things in our lives that we have an immense amount of control over. And don't get me wrong, I am not saying that all of your ‘have to’ tasks completely get thrown off the list. I do however challenge you to change your mindset around those tasks. Instead of telling yourself that you have to complete X, Y, and Z. Tell yourself you ‘want to’ complete the task. Integrating it with your bigger mission and vision. This may not seem like a huge change, but it just might be big enough to completely shift how you feel about your day-to-day tasks. This is a challenge for myself and whoever's reading this. Let's change that self-talk and who knows, it might just change your mindset and the way we view life. Setting you up to successfully tackle your day and creating excellence in your life.
I leave you with this quote by Aristotle:
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation.
We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly.
We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” ~Aristotle
